Vote Not Fight Advocate for Violence Free Campaign and Election

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Edo State Labour Party Chairman, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi has reiterated the party's commitment to adhere to the peace agreement signed recently in Abuja. Comrade Ogbaloi stated this while receiving members of state technical committee on Vote Not Fight campaign on an advocacy visit to the party Secretariat in Benin City. He also noted that his party had always worked within the framework of democratic tenents. According to him, the Vote Not Fight remain the best slogan capable of evoking action from all political stakeholders in the state though some persons have decided to work with the old ways campaigning. Comrade Kelly further stated that despite the increased awareness of Vote Not Fight by ambassadors of peaceful election over the years, some mischievous politicians had remained adamant to such democratic tenents and had sustained hate speech capable of inciting violence ahead of the election. He however assured the committee that his party candidates would eshew hate speech as campaign commences. Speaking earlier, Edo State Technical Committee Coordinator, Mrs Edekor Ashetu disclosed that Vote Not Fight is an initiative of FACE in collaboration with NDI and other international donors on the need to promote youth participation in a violent free election. Mrs Edekor who said FACE Initiative is poised to achieve 70 percent youth participation, 50 percent women participation and 15 percent participation of people living with disabilities in the upcoming general elections stressed that it could only be achieved in a peaceful atmosphere during campaign and elections. She therefore stressed the need for the state party executive to contribute more to the actualization of the project by sensitizing the party candidates on the need to enshew hate speech ahead of the election. Also speaking, Head of Network for the Advancement of People living with Visible Disabilities (NAPVID), Barrister Melody Omosah explained the need for candidates to campaign on the policies instead of character defamation which according to him has led to many violent attacks on individuals during campaign and elections. He however charged the LP chairman to ensure people living with disabilities are not marginalized in their programs before and after the elections.
