The bean cakes hissed in red palm oil. Their aroma drifted across the street, teasing the nostrils of hungry schoolchildren. The girl watched her classmates spend their lunch money on one or two pieces, slip them into their pockets, and nibble at them while the teacher worked arithmetic on the blackboard.
