MIND Demand Youth Engagement by Edo state Government

By Osariemen Idiaghe

Mentoring Individual's Dream Initiative (MiND) has demanded from Edo state government qualified youth inclusiveness in appointive positions. MiND, a non- profit, non- political and non- governmental youth focused civic hub of active democratic change makers that are passionate in the advancement of good governance and civic rights handed down this demand at a public presentation of EDO YOUTHS AGENDA ( a data representation of Edo youths demands from government) to Journalists in Benin City, Edo state capital.

Speaking at the event, Mr Peter Aguebor said " over the years, MiND Initiative had continually partnered with both local and international organizations to actively engage our citizens in environmental friendly initiatives, support and advocate reforms in our democratic process that achieves a more sustainable development for the African continent. "

"With core values centered on accountability, results oriented, inclusion, integrity, innovation and teamwork with a mission to influence all- round citizens participation in the democratic process and to have informed climate change agents in our society.

Speaking further, he said young people below the age of 35 make up 60 percent of the general population and since the Youths are said to be leaders of tomorrow, this can only be made possible by providing an enabling environment and infrastructure for the youths He said "

The Edo state youth agenda is aimed to aggregate the yearnings of young persons to engage political actors in the state and to demand the state government accountability in its four years tenure."

He also revealed that the Edo state youth agenda is borne out from a survey carried out in the 18 local government areas of the state between January to March 2021 after the 2020 September 19th Edo state Governorship election in which 360 respondents with 20 respondents in each local government were targeted.

Mr Aguebor added that "from the survey carried out, Edo state youths demand that the present government focuses more on Education, Employment/Entrepreneurship, Health care, Agriculture and Security in his second tenure. It is the hope of Edo state youths that the government will as a matter of public interest expedite actions to implement the five priority needs of the youth as they are committed to push this demand till it gains full implementation. This agenda is expected to stimulate intense conversation among Edo state youths on youths active inclusion in decision making, good governance and service delivery that will bring about a more robust sustainable development in the state.

Going further, he therefore urged the Edo state governor to make a strong commitment by signing a pledge on implementing the youth's agenda by reviewing his MEGA agenda to accommodate the demands in the Edo youth agenda with special focus on gender inclusion and people living with disability (PLWD). That the state government should dedicate a minimum of 52 percent of the state annual budget to address the issues identified in the youth agenda with education allocated 15 -20 percent as recommended by United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) while Employment/Entrepreneurship, Security, Health care and Agriculture be allocated 8 percent each. The governor should dedicate a minimum of 45 percent of all appointive positions to qualified youths (18 - 35years) in order to allow inclusive governance that will lead to more sustainable development in the state and set up an agency for the immediate and effective implementation of the Edo youth agenda.
