Group Harps on Need For Eradication of Harmful Practices Against Women

The need for eradication of social/cultural harmful practices against women and the girl child in the society have been harped upon.



A Group known as WomenAid Collective (WACOL) in collaboration with Fifty-fifty (50/50) Action Women took the stand at a Town Hall meeting held in Benin City. 



The town hall meeting with the theme " To Promote and Protect women's Rights and end all forms of discrimination and violence against women" had in attendance various stakeholders from civil society organizations,  FIDA, the media, 

Edo state ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, the Judiciary, community leaders among others.



Among the social cultural harmful practices against women which stakeholders frowned at include widowhood practices, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), forced and early marriages, gender disparity among others. 



A Resource Person who is a Lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Benin, Mrs Hadiza Okunrobo in her presentation stressed on the need to get rid of these harmful practices against women and girls that hinder development of women and has also instilled in them the culture of silence.



According to Mrs Hadiza, the " the town hall meeting was to strategise and enlighten stakeholders on the negative norms that promote violence against women and girls in the society. What we are against are the negative norms inflicting pain and violence on our women and girls. We are looking at FGM, widowhood practices , early marriages and forced marriages among others. "



She lamented that so many women are dying in silence from such practices as a result of the culture of silence due to the society they find themselves. 



The resource person stressed on the need to eradicate such norms and practices inflicting pain and violence on women and girls. 


Speaking on behalf of WACOL, the Programmes Manager, 

Mrs Blessing Egodi said they decided to engage different stakeholders in the South South and South East on the need to enlighten the women to speak out and not die in silence.
