We Remain Chairmen of Our Local Government Councils -- ALGON Chairman
By Osariemen Idiaghe
The 18 Local Government Council Chairmen in Edo State have described their suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly as nullity and vowed to remain in office as Chairmen.
The local government Chairmen under the aegis of Association of Local Government of Nigeria while addressing journalists on Wednesday at the Edo State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists said the purported suspension was based on the premise of alleged gross misconduct.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairmen, Hon Newman Ugiagbe, Chairman Orhionmwon Local Government Council stated that the suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 was against the order of the court.
Ugiagbe who is also the Edo State ALGON Chairman said their suspension was unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.
According to him, the association on December 17, 2024, served the speaker of the house of assembly a reminder of another suit numbered B/3070s/2024 instituted against Governor Monday Okpebholo.
He said in the suit, the state high court 2 granted the Chairmen an interim order restraining the defendants from interfering with, obstructing and disturbing the claimants of exercise of their constitutional rights over all assets and funds allocated to them from the federation account..
He added that the court restrained the defendants from suspending, removing, redeploying, meddling, or in a manner interfering with them in the administration and management of the councils on or before the expiration of the tenure of three years as stipulated under the Edo State local government law 2000.
The ALGON Chairman therefore called on security agencies and other government institutions saddled with the responsibility of enforcing law and order to protect and safeguard all assets and buildings of the local government councils and expressed the hope that the deployment of security personnel would help to create an enabling environment for a smooth discharge of the functions for which they are elected to to perform.
