EFCC GIVES UPDATE ON THE RELEASE OF GOV OKPEBHOLO'S EX AID

BY OSARIEMEN IDIAGHE

The Acting Zonal Director of the Benin Zone of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in charge of Edo, Effang Okim, has given an update on how  Governor OKPEBHOLO'S ex- aid   Kelly Okungbowa(aka Ebo Stone) who was arrested on allegations of naira abuse was released from its custody.

He gave the update when answering questions from journalists  at the Secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) in Benin City, Edo state.

Effang Okim explained that Kelly Okungbowa was taken to a federal High Court were his case was presided over by a Judge who granted him bail, and having met the bail conditions, the commission had to release him.

The Zonal Director stated that the EFCC as an agency does not make laws but only enforces laws hence the decision to place the suspect in a separate cell was a  matter of  public interest and safety particularly among the youths.

“He was detained in the best and right procedure and he was taken to a competent court of law, a Federal High Court with a competent judge presiding over the case,”

Okim added that the court adjourned Okungbowa’s case to May 20th for hearing.

“In this process of investigation and prosecution where are we lacking? We deserve some praise. I have told my men that some people are out to distract us. But we will remain focused. We’re too serious minded and focus driven.”

He commended the leadership and members of the NUJ for the cordial relationship between the commission and  journalists in the state.

Responding Dr. Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, commended the agency  for their diligence which has reduced  activities of Internet fraudsters in Edo State.

The NUJ chairman however raised the issue of  recent increase in ritual killings which the fraudsters have now resorted to.

Alenkhe however pledged the union 's support to the Zonal Director and his team.
