By Osariemen Idiaghe

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS),Hon Barrister Oladele Bankole Balogun, has denied any link between the EIRS and activities/ members of the suspended Public Safety  Response Team (PSRT) which resulted in the death of a two-year-old child in Benin City.

Barrister Balogun made the  clarification when the leadership of  the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council led by Dr Festus Alenkhe paid him a courtesy visit in Benin City saying that they are not members of staff of EIRS

He frowned at the political undertones surrounding the incident, stating that some individuals take delight in discrediting the democratically elected government of Senator Monday Okpebholo

On the issue of increase of tax for private schools, Barrister Balogun also denied any increment  nothing that the service cannot abitrarily increase tax without relevant laws by the House of Assembly and approval of the state government.

" Taxation and tax laws are governed by statues, it's governed by law.

"One cannot abitrarily get up and increase tax or tax you, every tax is itemized by law.

"So the tax that schools, individuals and private enterprises are made to pay are governed by laws, there is a formula for that.

"Maybe the situation some of these people are facing is because the revenue service is now alive to its responsibilities and chasing after people who have been under assessed or have been under declaring or have been evading or avoiding tax."

He therefore appealed to citizens to take the issue of tax payments as a civic responsibility to enable the government develope the state.

The EIRS boss commended the  administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo for his developmental strides

Speaking earlier, the NUJ chairman, Dr Festus Alenkhe commended the leadership of EIRS boss and his team for the good work they are doing.

He appealed to the leadership of the service to educate the staff  to be civil and humane in carrying out their revenue drive

He also sued for more collaboration between the service and NUJ so that residents are properly informed on the activities of the service.
