The member representing Oredo East Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly and National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Frank Uyi Omosigho, has decried the alleged destruction of his campaign posters and billboards in parts of Oredo ahead of the 2027 general election.
Omosigho made the allegation on Tuesday when members of OTUEDO N’OGBENBE, the Benin Journalists Forum, paid him a familiarisation visit in Benin City.
The lawmaker alleged that some of his campaign materials were pulled down in different locations, including Stadium Road, Oguola, Oliha, Five Junction and Ekehuan Road.
"My campaign organisation has encountered difficulties securing campaign spaces. And after some posters were eventually mounted, persons suspected to be acting against my ambition removed them," he stated.
According to him, instead of retaliating, he urged his supporters to remain peaceful and continue to engage voters on the programmes and achievements of their candidate.
Omosigho appealed to youths across Edo State to reject political violence, saying the 2027 election should not be reduced to a contest involving thuggery, destruction of campaign materials or physical confrontation.
He urged journalists and other stakeholders to use their platforms to promote peaceful campaigns, adding that political parties should tell voters what they have done and what they intended to do to improve the lives of the people.
The lawmaker also highlighted some of his constituency interventions, which according to him, include restoration of about 4,000 streetlights across the six wards in Oredo East, while 11 transformers were provided in various communities, including Stadium Road, Bowman Market and Oguola.
Omosigho further said he had organised town-hall meetings across the wards to identify the needs of residents, while projects and interventions included public toilets, educational assistance, a football tournament and a health insurance scheme for about 500 people.
On security, he said he sponsored a motion in the Edo State House of Assembly on killings and cult-related activities, which he said later contributed to the enactment of legislation addressing the problem.
He urged Oredo voters to assess candidates based on their records and programmes, rather than allowing political violence or inducement to determine their choices.
Omosigho said he was seeking election to the House of Representatives to consolidate what he described as his grassroots interventions and provide further representation for the people of Oredo Federal Constituency.
Earlier, the convener of OTUEDO N’OGBENBE, Comrade Edosa Okunbo, said the visit was a familiarisation meeting between members of the Benin Journalists Forum and the lawmaker.
Okunbo said the group promotes transparent and accountable governance and seeks inclusive governance, with particular emphasis on grassroots development across Edo South, while encouraging members to use their respective mediums to deepen developmental journalism.
